Exmouth/Ningaloo
Drove about 600kms from Port Hedland through the Pilbara region including Karratha and Roebourne , to be honest not the most riveting scenery and the area must be glad it's got lots off minerals resources as a industry , could not do the last 200kms to Exmouth that day so stopped by the road for the night with some other campers.
Next day got into Exmouth nice and early and got a site in town rather then on the reef and national park side . Nice clean town with a population of 2,500 ...
The town seems to have everything we need for 5 days and as we drove in we had the company of two emus wandering down the main road .
Exmouth is 1300kms from Broome and 1200kms from Perth and apart from tourism and seafood industry has a USA /AUS communication base that was
Built in the 60,s and the town was built to support it.
Ningaloo is well known for it's reef that is very close to land plus the whalesharks that come here when the coral is spawning . Very popular trip is to swim with the whalesharks April until August .
First day drove to the lighthouse on the reef side and visit the shipwreck from 1907 . Saw whales breeching from the lighthouse quite close to land.
Day 2 drove to the national park on the Ningaloo reef side and stopped at the ranger station to find out about fishing and snorkeling . Visited yardie creek and did the 1hour walk to the gorge and got nicely sunburnt on my shoulders !.
Rest of the afternoon went to a bay called Sandy bay which was white sand , turquoise waters and deserted . Walking through the water upto our knees spotting turtles swimming among us .
Next few days going to take it easy with some fishing , snorkeling and prawn eating .
