Shark Bay (Denham & Monkey Mia )

Well we travelled here after spending a week in Carnarvon. Had a really quiet week at Carnarvon. Nice little town to see but not a great deal to do but fish , read and relax . Surprise ,surprise the fish were a bit scarce , might of been due to the weather as the wind really got up while we were there . Fishing on the jetty that is a mile long while it's blowing a gale is not fun.
At least the pub was showing the rugby quarters and semis so we managed to see the footy .
Spent one day at Quobba which is about 75kms north and known for it's blowhole and rock fishing . Great scenery but fishing off the rocks is not my cup of tea . King waves kill !!
Left to travel to Shark Bay which was only about 250kms away. The area is a world heritage area due to it's terrain , the wildlife and pristine environment .
Stayed in Denham ( population 2,000) which has a few shops on the beach front and the campground has direct beach access .
On the other side of the bay is the resort Monkey Mia which is known for the wild dolphins that come in to the shallows to be fed and swim among the on lookers . The day we were there about 7 came in . We also did a bush walk while there and saw wild emus and their chicks wandering round .
Second day we drove 100kms to Hamelin pool which has an area on the beach that is covered in stromalites ( please google , to hard to describe their role in the universe) then drove back to Denham stopping at a lot of bays including 1. Nanga Bay which if we had more time would of stayed a couple nights as it was pristine and meant to be great fishing ,2. shell beach Which is totally covered in small shells for miles and 3 .Eagle Bluff which has a walkway on cliff tops overlooking an area frequented by dugongs, sharks and turtles . A very busy day.
The other days were taken up with fishing ( caught a couple of shovel nose sharks , flathead and bream) and the last day went on a cruise in Shark bay .
We enjoyed the cruise on a large catamaran even though the wind did get up a bit , saw dolphins and dugongs including one very close to the boat.
Driving back that night to the trailer to turn a corner to meet mummy emu and 6 chicks crossing the road , had to stop to let them cross
Good time spent there and could quite easily return next year and do 3 months working part time while seeing more of the area including Francois Peron national park which is 4wd drive remote camping .

Coral Bay , WA

Left Exmouth with the idea of staying two/ three days at coral bay , leaving tomorrow after 10 days .
The town is very small with a population of 150 , it has two camping /caravan parks , a hotel with pub and some small shops that are all geared up to tourism. As you drive in the road finishes where the beach starts and what a beautiful place . Stunning clear blue water, white sand and the ningaloo reef on the horizon. The bay is great swimming with coral reefs very close to the shore so really easy snorkeling , it is also a marine park so with no fishing allowed in the main bay it is full of fish , rays etc.
Around the headland is a shark nursery where the juvenile sharks gather before heading off as they grow older. We counted 40 in the surf and as the water is shallow they come very close to the beach , not a place to paddle.
We spent the days swimming , snorkeling , beach walking and some beach fishing but with no luck. There are fishing charters that cost $ 260 pp and they go out to the reef with great success judging by what they brought back at the end of the day to fillet , snapper, sweetlip , coral trout etc.
The other pleasant surprise was the pub it is a rarity in WA as it is showing the rugby world cup live so we managed to be able to see a few games. Saw the England game against Scotland and got confused as the English support team where not swapping the balls when Jonny went to kick !
Today was the last day , it is school holidays this week and next in WA so the place is pretty chocker as you would expect so time for us to go.
Hired a kayak today and went out to see the reef etc , is it me or are both kayakers meant to paddle ?
Off to Carnarvon tomorrow for a couple of night ( booked a cabin so we can watch the quarter finals in peace ) before going to a place called Quobba for 5 nights which should be a bit out of the way for the last week of school holidays
